Isle of Man golfer and long-time OAK Ambassador Tom Gandy finished the three event Canary Island ‘Swing’ with his best ever European Tour finish in the Canary Islands Championship in Tenerife at the weekend.
After electing to miss the start of the Challenge Tour in favour of playing as many full European Tour events as possible, the Rowany man had been having a slow start to his season, playing some good golf but not quite managing to make it through to the weekend on any of his first 3 starts in Austria, Gran Canaria, or Tenerife.
The Gran Canaria event was especially frustrating as, despite a closing birdie and a four under par total across the first two days, he fell a single shot short of the halfway cut. However, it all clicked into place on his second week at the Golf Costa Adeje resort in Tenerife.
After a solid one under par round of 70 on Day One, his game caught fire on Day Two with an 8 under par round of 63, which included 7 birdies and an eagle, seeing him launch up the leaderboard, and catapulting the Manx flag onto TV screens around Europe. Another 70, followed by a fine round of 67 on the final day saw Tom cement his place inside the Top 30, with a career best finish of Tied 27th.
As Tom said on his Social Media feed,
“Four rounds under par, my lowest ever round as a pro, and my best finish on the European Tour. It’s been a good week.”
